Women’s basketball looking to get handle on where it fits in Skyway picture

By Morton College News | Posted January 11, 2013

Morton College and Moraine Valley kick off the start of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference women’s basketball season with Tip-Off Classic on noon Saturday, January 12, at Elgin Community College.

Coach Larry Lanciotti is eager to see where Morton College fits in the Illinois Skyway picture. The Panthers will find out right away against Moraine Valley, which Lanciotti puts in his pre-season top three with Elgin and Prairie State.

The Panthers were 8-7 in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Morton College fell to Kankakee 70-56 January 8 on the road, but Panthers’ performance left Lanciotti with room for optimism.

“We played pretty good defense and for the most part, we were within four to six points in the first half,” Lanciotti said. “We fought hard and probably played our best 40 minutes of basketball on the year.”

Rose Capone led Morton College with 16 points, followed by Anita Robinson (14) and Joanna Garcia (12).

All eight Illinois Skyway teams will be under one roof this weekend at Elgin Community College. The women’s round is January 12 and the men compete on Sunday, January 13.

The schedule for both days is:

Noon: Morton College vs. Moraine Valley

2 p.m: Prairie State vs. Lake County

4 p.m.: Oakton vs. McHenry

6 p.m.: Waubonsee vs. Elgin
